Broken

So we didn't quite make it to the "good nights sleep" part before we decided it was time to take the kid to emerg. It was 9:30, and he was writing around in pain with no sign of sleep in sight, and screaming "I need go doctor!" So we figured, hey, maybe the kid needs to go to the doctor! Griffin is generally pretty tough, so 4 hours of crying and a request to go to the doctor was a pretty good indication that we should pack up and go.

It was 1:30 am before we left the hospital. Griffin finally crashed at around 11:30pm, after a rather traumatic x-ray followed by a massive dose of Advil. I will save the rant on the uncomfortable hospital chairs for another day.

Diagnosis - kid cracked his elbow. A wee little crack, that will hurt like a son of a bitch for 2 to 3 weeks. No cast necessary, but we were advised to keep him in a sling, which he LOVES. (That was scarcasmo, in case you missed it!) I made him a funky sling this morning, with a great bugs and snakes fabric, and on our run into town to stock up on Advil, we stopped in at the fabric store to let him pick out one more cool fabric for a sling....pictures to follow!

In other news, Griffin's birthday is next week. Months ago, he decided he wanted a pet fish, and I offhandedly said "maybe you can get some for your birthday." Steve and I had talked about it since then, and decided against it, and banked on him forgetting about it anyway.

Guess what? He didn't forget.

Steve dropped him off at daycare on Monday, where Linda informed him that Griffin had been talking for weeks about the fish he was going to get for his birthday.

Damn him, and his good memory.

So. Fish. And a tank, and a pump, and rocks, and on and on and on. Anyone have any fish advice they want to share?

Oh! I hope he feels better soon! I chipped a chunk off my elbow once and that hurt like crazy for a long time. I love the idea of making him his own slings though!

As for the fish - Beta. Or goldfish. No filter, heater or air pump required. Just a bowl, some rocks and a bit of food. That way you won't be in too deep in case he tires of it. And you can always move a Beta to a big "real" tank later if you want.

One word: Ecojar. It's a fabulous thing. I've done a simplified version a handful of times, and loved it. We'll even offer up some pond fish!

If you do decide for 'real tank' I'm pretty sure mine is still in my mom's basement. We would ALL be happy if you inherited it.

I second the Beta fish vote. Easy peasy no nonsense fish... and cool colours too.

Hope the little guy is feeling better soon.

Yikes! Sorry about the elbow! What a trooper you must have!

My fish advice is this - if you decide on a "real tank" get it set up ASAP. The water needs to circulate for several days before fish are added. There's nothing worse than an empty aquarium on your birthday. Oh, wait - yes there is. You could have dead fish the day after your birthday:)

Will you send me your address again? I'm sorry that I lost it, but I really do want to send you this book!

Awww, poor baby. I hate that he cracked his elbow. :( You'll definitely have to post a picture of his fish when you give it to him!
