Crossing fingers and toes

*tap tap tap*

"Is this thing still on?"

"Can anyone hear me?"

(hears distant, far off cry in response)

"Yes? Yes! Can you hear me in the back there?"

*********************

Oh hai. Glad you're still here. Things have been a wee bit nutso around here this week. And aren't likely to get much better.

Slightly sad face, as our little Blue House on the roof has a big old "For Sale" sign on it. But as bigger and better things are afoot, we're not ones to dwell.

(I'll wax poetic about it before we go, I promise.)

In the mean time, we deal with showings upon showings, none of which we complain about (out loud,) as they all get us one step closer to our goal - to move forward and move on and to start anew.

And we cross our fingers and our toes and our anything else's, that this all works out the way (the way that we feel in our bones) that it's meant to work out.

If you have any spare fingers, or toes, or anything elses, won't you cross them for us too? We'd very much appreciate it if you did!

With love, from the Roof, Us

Frosty New Years

So it's December 30th, and we found out today that we'll be ringing in the new year with a busted furnace. And really, we'll likely be ringing in the first four or five days of the new year that way, since fixing a busted furnace 24 hours before New Years eve isn't on anyone's priority list. Luckily, we have a snazzy little propane stove in our living room, plus a decent electric fireplace that we can move around the house. Oh, not to mention its not terribly cold outside. In fact, it's hovering around freezing rain temperature, which I hear that it's been doing all day. Not that I would know, I haven't gone anywhere! Griffin is camped out on the floor of our bedroom in his indoor tent, and couldn't be happier. Corben will crawl into bed with us when we head there, and the dog will keep all of our feet warm. So really, it's not all that bad. Just think of all the money we're saving in propane! A happy, healthy (and warm!) New Year to you, wherever you may be! xoxox

Bye-bye 'tuff*

Since discovering our dream property a week ago, and partially because we've been off work with little to do but sit around and talk and dream, there has been a lot of just that - talking and dreaming about what our future might hold.

And since we are opening ourselves up to the possibility that our dream come true might be just around the corner, we have been going about my days with a sense of purpose. We've been researching, educating ourselves, learning new things.

We (or more specifically, I) have also been saying goodbye to old things.

Yes, there is a massive purge in progress here, people.

I've been starting slow - cleaning - going through cupboards and closets.  Every thing I pick up, I've been looking closely at.

I ask myself - When I move into my dream home, would I want to take this with me?

And if the answer is no?  Sianora, stuff.

Because really, at the end of the day, if I don't want it in my dream home, why would I want it in this one?  If it isn't serving a purpose, making my life better in some way, then why is it here?  Now don't get me wrong...I'm not going totally bonkers crazy.  Like the bed that we currently own will NOT be coming with me anywhere past these doors, but sleeping on the floor would suck (only slightly) more than my current mattress, so it gets to stay.  For now.

It looks better in here already.  There is a pile of stuff at the back door that will likely make someone, somewhere, very happy.

And I am making me very happy too.

And that?  Is a good thing.

(* Imagine the post title coming from the cutest little two year old you've ever seen, in his sing song two year old voice, that likes to say bye-bye to just about everything in the room when he leaves it.  Or everything in the car as he drives past it.  It's one of the 239873 things that is adorable about Corben right now.)

FIN

I screwed the tops on 14 pints of salsa today, and officially declared the canning season here on the roof over.
We did not too bad this year, canning more varieties of stuff than ever before. Still, for next season I'm hoping that we can get a pressure canner (do you hear that, Santa?) and I can go way above and beyond what we did this year. However, between Picklepalooza (dills, bread and butter pickles and relish,) peaches, apple sauce, blueberry jam and salsa, I'd say we did OK.
I'm also over the top excited about my new little basement "pantry," even though we ran out of room half way through the season (there's a bunch of pickles stacked on the floor, and the salsa is still cooling in the kitchen.)

There's also a bushel of tomatoes that were blanched, peeled and put in the freezer, because I ran out of time to can them all before they went off! Good thing though, because we wouldn't have had room for them!

I didn't freeze as much as I could have this year, there were a lot of beans that could have been salvaged, and I'm sorry that I didn't cut the kale more often and freeze it. However, there is a whole pile of blueberries in the freezer, and even more strawberries to get us through the winter.

There are still a ton of potatoes in the garden that haven't been dug, and a wheelbarrow full of squash sitting at my back door. Seriously, a wheelbarrow. What the hell am I going to do with a wheelbarrow full of squash??!! I'm considering digging the potatoes and trying to store them in the basement somewhere cool, but I'm not sure if it's actually cold enough in the basement for them. Anyone have any potato storage tips?

(By the way, this year's salsa? Is AWESOME! It's got a nice kick, with a bit of a smokey flavour thanks to some chipotle chili pepper I tossed in there at the last minute.)

So, when winter's frigid hand finally strikes, we'll be the ones sitting around eating salsa and sweet Ontario peaches, tasting the fresh tastes of summer all over again. You know where we are, if you want to come and join us!

5 Years on the Roof

Last week, a little anniversary slipped by quietly. When I realized (today) that it had slipped by unnoticed, I got upset with myself, and so decided to commemorate it here in a big way.

Peeps, 5 years ago this week, Steve and I moved to the Roof.

We moved into this very house that we still live in today. The house was in great shape when we moved in, the only thing it needed was a paint job.

But woah, what a paint job it was.

We put out the call - Painters needed. Will trade painting for food and alcohol. Not surprisingly, they came in droves. (Provided a drove is 5 people.) Annnd...we got to work.

We have high ceilings, which means lots of wall, which means lots of paint. See?So we painted the walls. And then we tackled the kitchen.

Oh, the kitchen. This is what the kitchen looked like when we started it:We decided to paint the cabinets. And paint them we did. We took off all the doors, and painted them, and then moved them to another part of the house were there was no painting going on. And the next day we did the same thing. And the next. And the next. We painted and moved those cabinet doors SIX TIMES, Y'ALL. Six coats of paint, both sides.

Here they are in the basement:And in the dining room:And in the master bedroom:They spent a day on the porch too, but I think by that time we had got tired of taking pictures of the damn things. There were lots of people standing on counters in our kitchen that week. But every last coat of paint was worth it. Bye bye country blue kitchen, and hello Butter Yellow:We spent a lot of that week on the porch. Daytime, night time, sunny weather, chilly weather, the wrap around porch never got so much use as it that one week.
We had a lot of laughs. (We also had a lot of gin, which may explain some of the laughs.)

There might have been some peek-a-boo in the grass (can you spot the hidden Lindsey?)
Blood, sweat, and tears (of laughter.) Yup, a bit of blood. Doug shot himself with the nail gun. (Thank me now for sparing you the picture.) There was also a few fatalities:
She looks nice and all, but she kills a mean fly!
And what's a party without bacon? (Not a party at all.)
We came up here with as little as possible that week, not wanting to be tripping over furniture and boxes the entire time. (Little did we know we'd be tripping over cabinet doors all freaking week!) We slept on air mattresses on the floor drank out of plastic cups, ate off of paper plates, and I've never had so much fun painting in my life. (OK...truth be told, I did very little painting. I was on Team Basement, which was putting in a sub floor, framing and insulating the basement, and shooting Doug in the hand with nail guns. Yes folks, on top of my supreme pickling skills, and my title as reigning queen of Laundry, I am more than a little proficient with power tools.)

5 years later the porch is just as lovely, and the sunsets are just as breathtaking. And the kitchen cabinets? Well...they could use a bit of touch up. Anyone up for a painting party?

How does your garden grow?

I've been feeling a little bit ick lately. Like there's something trying to invade my body. On Wednesday morning for the first time, I quit half way through my run, because cleaning barf off the elliptical wasn't something I felt like doing that day. I sucked it up, and we spent the morning at the beach with some friends, which was awesome. But last night we had the most craptacular sleep EVER, and today I feel like arse again.

So instead of my complaining and moaning, I leave you with these:

This is my garden, trying, and succeeding quite well, at escaping it's fence.Fence, what fence? You can hardly SEE the damn fence anymore!

These pumpkin/squash vines are going to need their own damn postal code soon...they're out of control!
But...a peek under some leaves, and look what they're making. (Except with all these vines, I have only found 2 pumpkins. Two. Lame.)
Squash. We are going to be up to our eyeballs in squash. I hope y'all like squash!
The potato plants have been taken over by potato bugs, so I'm hauling them out. Potato bugs bad. But fresh spuds, right out of the ground? GOOOOD!
And...we are STILL getting strawberries. Apparently I bought ever-bearing strawberry plants, which I didn't even know existed. Every few days we find another one or two, and Griffin gets a little treat. Except today Griffin wasn't home...
And Mama got a little treat instead!
Dirty fingers, covered with strawberry juices. Life is good.

Excitement

Once again, our house is in a state of chaos.

Since we've decided to stay here in the blue house (more on that later) we've also decided to go ahead with some improvements we've been meaning to do around here.

Improvement #1 - Carpet the basement. This happens on Monday.

The biggest, most excitingest part of this endeavor, is that we'll be turning the room formerly known as my sewing room into a playroom for the boys.

Getting to create a playroom from scratch? TOTALLY. AWESOME!

I'll do some before and after pictures, but in the mean time, here's a little peek at our inspiration for our new room:Source

How freaking cool is that? I'm so totally excited! Stay tuned!

Not the way I would have planned it...

I washed the basement floors today. It's the first time I've done that since we've moved in, mostly because there's nothing but subfloor down there.

However, I only "washed" the basement floor because the washing machine overflowed. Like MASSIVELY overflowed.

How could that happen, you ask?

Well, when your washing machine doesn't work properly, and the water dribbles into it to fill it instead of flowing heartily, you may consider putting a hose from your laundry sink into the washing machine if you want to get more than one load done every millennium. And if you have a baby in a sling, or a three year old in the next room, there is a small chance that something may distract you from said hose filling said washing machine.

And then, 15 minutes later, when your husband says "is there water running somewhere?" you will bolt from your seat, hand your husband the baby, and head downstairs to survey the damage, and commence with the "washing of the floors." Which, of course, is a nice way of putting "vacuuming up the gallons of water on the subfloor" along with "taking up the laminate."

Thank GOODNESS that there were PILES upon PILES of clothing on the laundry room floor to soak up a good gallon or 26.

See, there is something to be said for leaving all that laundry on the floor....

Happiness: Weekend

We've had a lot of fun and happiness here this weekend, we've just been too busy to sit and write about it!

On Satuday, faced with a hyper toddler and a (seemingly) foggy day, we packed up and headed into the city to the Cabbagetown Arts Festival. We went and checked out all the animals at Riverdale farm, and had a visit with Gretel and her new and improved FancyPantsKids setup. Griffin fell head over heels in love with Gretel's Dragon Tails, and proceeded to dance around the festival for a few hours sporting his green tail, and roaring at people.
The day turned out to be not foggy at all, but sunny, beautiful and HOT! We had a great time (in the 3 hours that our parking metre allowed us) and then headed home again.

On Sunday morning, Griffin and I decided that the contents of the fridge were boring, and headed out for breakfast.
We then came home and decided to check on the progress of the garden (despite being already dressed for Sunday dinner.) We found our potato plants ready to dig up, so dig we did. As I was digging, I suddenly found myself with a hand full of this, when I was expecting potatoes:

He scared the bejezus out of me! (Not that I'm scared of frogs, but when you're expecting potatoes and you come up with a hand full of frog, you can see how I could have been slightly terrified!)

I pulled up a TON of potatoes, one of the 8 heirloom varieties I planted! Methinks I'm going to have to read up on cellaring potatoes! Anyone have any tips? And while you're at it, how about zucchini recipes?
Hope your weekend was as fun and exciting!

Happiness: The Blue House

Make no mistake about it - our house ("The Blue House") has made us pretty darn happy for the past 4 years.

I had a bloggy friend comment that at first she was very confused about why we'd be moving into town. And then I thought, heck, why wouldn't she be! We do nothing but gush about our little slice of heaven here in the country (except for in the winter!) so why the heck would we be leaving it? So I thought maybe I should really, thoroughly explain.

Steve and I moved up here in 2005, hot on the tails of a dream that we've both had for many many years - to live in the country, and start our own little empire if you will. We were going to live here forever, growing as we needed to suit us and our family. Aside from a teeny apartment in Toronto that we shared (which wasn't really "ours," it was mine and Steve moved in) the Blue House is the only home we've ever known together. We got married here right in our living room, we brought Dudley home here, and just a few months later we brought Griffin to join us. This is the only home Griffin has ever known. He learned to crawl on these floors, and walk on them later. This home holds a gazillion billion happy memories for us, and we will miss it when we go.

However, I slowly started to realize that living in the country was only part of my dream. The real dream was more about more living SIMPLY, and I began to realize that that didn't necessarily mean in the country. I also realized, after failed attempts at a few careers, that my true desire was to be at home with my children, and be a full time mother to them for as many years as I possibly could.

There were challenges too out here - the seemingly simplest things that have proved challenging for me - for example - in the middle of the winter, when your husband is away and you need to spend 40 minutes plowing out the drive just to get the car out to go to the grocery store for milk, what the heck do you do with the infant of the manor, or soon to be one infant and one toddler?? (As you well know, a toddler can get himself into a whole BUNCH of trouble in 40 unsupervised minutes!)

So this move into town, its a big step towards achieving that "new" dream. We are going to be lowering our monthly payments by a good chunk, so I can hopefully stay home. We can go back to WALKING places, and maybe even maybe go back to being a one car family. Our children can walk to school - it's just on the other side of the back yard. I can still grow my garden, let my children run free in the yard, and lead a simple life - with much less stuff in way less space.

I used to think that memories were tied tightly to a specific place, but that's not necessarily true. We will take the memories of the Blue House with us when we go - they travel with US, the people that made them. And together, as our little family grows, we'll make even more of them in our new home.

And every time I think of the Blue House, and what we have accomplished here, I will smile.

Happiness: Day 5

Well peeps, we did it. We got the house!

(Wahoo!)

Now all we have to do is sell this one. Anybody want to buy a house?
We had a great day today - after a FULL nights sleep last night for all of us (I didn't even wake up to pee...it's some kind of miracle!) we all felt like new people this morning. We cleaned and cut grass and made this house ready to go on the market, and after a long but incredibly productive day, we're exhausted, but ready. It looks FANTASTIC in here!!

I even found a few minutes this afternoon to go out and pull some goodies out of the garden. Harvesting food grown by ones own hands has got to be one of the most satisfying things there is in life. (Well, in my life anyway.)Griffin is doing much better, I think he gets quite the sense of security from the hard shell protecting his arm. He was a bit fragile today still, I think overtired combined with frustration of not being able to use his left hand, but we made it through. When he's cranky, he's REALLY cranky, but when he's cute? He's oh so incredibly heart-melting, and you forget about all the yelling and screaming that happened earlier!
This week is going to be a busy week. Not only is there home inspections and banking and all that jazz to deal with, but Steve is out of town most of the week, and I have a wickedly busy week at work. But my biggest problem? What the hell is my kid going to WEAR all week? None of his clothes fit over that silly cast!

Ah well, an excellent excuse to go digging in the "clothes that are too big pile" and see what we can find. Otherwise, a trip to Value Village it is!

Hope your Sunday was as wonderful as ours!

Happiness: Day 4

Last night? Sucked.

Griffin fell asleep at around 8pm. At 9pm, he was awake again, writhing in pain and generally uncomfortable. 9:30, asleep again. 11pm, awake again, more writhing, for a good 1/2 hour this time. 11:45pm, asleep. 1am, awake, MORE writhing, until about 2:30, or somewhere around there when I finally stopped keeping track. At 3:30 I finally called Telehealth. At 5:30am I decided I'd had enough and we packed up to head to the ER, for the 2nd time in 3 days.

Turns out the crack in Griffin's elbow has either deepened, or was worse than the doctor had originally thought. He's now sporting a weird 1/2 cast thingy, which essentially is a plaster casted splint running around the outside of his arm, with a tensor bandage holding it on. The bonus of this sort of cast is that it can be taken off for bathing, or washing the nastiness off the bandage as is apt to happen with a three year old! We're waiting for a follow-up appointment at the fracture clinic at a bigger and fancier hospital, to happen in the next two weeks. (So much for going to the waterpark for the kid's birthday!)

Needless to say, with little to no sleep, we were all a WRECK this morning, with the exception of Griffin who was high as a kite from the mass dose of Tylenol, Advil AND straight up codeine that they gave him at the hospital. Seriously - high. Like giggling like a little girl high and answering questions with the strangest spaced out answers ever! Steve and I had a great laugh with him, he was just too cute! (Plus we were exhausted, so it was even funnier!)

We had an appointment for 10 in town this morning, to carry on with our house hunting search. And now, for the happiness part of the day - we put in an offer! It's a beautiful home, right in the heart of downtown Roofville, and I hope to heck that we get it, because we're already in love with it and placing the furniture!

Again, I have no pictures to share today...I'd love to show you the house, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high until we know something for sure.

We are all going to bed early tonight. As in, soon.

Hoping tomorrow brings less pain for the little one, more alert time for the rest of us and some good house news to share!

Ah, holidays!

Well, we've had a very productive week here. It's maybe been a bit more productive in the "relaxing" department than the "doing stuff" department, but that's what holidays are for, right?

We spent Sunday and Monday in London for a family gathering, and got to spend some quality niece and nephew time...sweet!
The garden is tilled and raked and ready for planting, and the plants are on standby, and every fibre of my being wants to put them in the garden, but I am SO afraid of loosing everything to the frost like last year, that I'm holding off for a little while longer until after the full moon in a few weeks. I may sow some of the hardier seeds, put the potatoes in the ground and all that, but the tender little heirloom tomato seedlings that have only recently sprouted are going to have to wait until I'm certain they're not going to die a frosty death.

Yesterday we worked very hard at the relaxing, and Mom and I spent the day shopping and hanging out with Griffin. We all got some sun, and spent some excellent time in the "Super Park," and Mom has been playing her roll of the Laundry Fairy to the max! Most excellent.

I am VERY excited about today, as today is "Take Back the Greenhouse" day. We're taking 3 years worth of crap away from here, and I'm starting the process of turning the greenhouse BACK into a greenhouse! One that you can grow plants in! It's going to involve some minor renovations, but once it's back to greenhouse it's going to be wickedly wonderful! I have high hopes of extending our growing season by a month or so on either end, and since we're going to cut the size of it in half, it may be feasible to pump some extra heat into it when needed.

A Satisfying Day

Aside from the hour that I spent TRYING to coax my uninterested toddler into taking a nap this afternoon, we spent practically the entire day OUTSIDE today.

Ah, spring. Thanks for stopping in!

We borrowed Lawnmower Dave and his super tractor for a few hours today, to get rid of a pile of construction debris and dirt that was left here by the previous owners of the house. The previous owners who lived here....um....four years ago! Needless to say, the pile is full of dirt and weeds and grass that has come up gone down four times over. The first summer we were here, we pretty much ignored it. The second summer we called those dudes with the "We haul your junk" signs all over town, but they wanted WAY too much money to do our dirty work (go figure!) so since I was too fat and pregnant to do any hauling of my own, we ignored it for another year. Last summer Dave gave the pile a few nudges with his tractor and we took some of the stuff away, but not nearly all of it. Today however, Dave pulled his trailer over here, and we worked ALL MORNING picking rotting lumber out of the dirt, dumping it in the trailer, and smoothing out the land. Aside from the excess dirt on the grass, you'd never know there was anything ever resembling a pile of anything over there!

Next weekend we will dig holes and plant another 8 cedar trees on the south east side of the property (where Dave cleared another pile of lawd knows what today) to match the 8 we planted last year on the south west side, and then we'll likely head over to a friend's house to steal some of her trees to plant on the property line on the west side to protect us some more from Old Man Winter.

After the playing in the dirt and the trying to talk the kid into a nap, we headed off to a birthday party for one of Griffin's buddies. It went EXACTLY as I predicted with a MAJOR meltdown about 1/2 way through the party, when after a diaper change the kid decided he didn't want to go back outside, and figured that the best way to keep himself inside was to absolutely, completely and totally REFUSE to put his pants back on. I humoured him for about 15 minutes, and then wrestled him into his pants to go back out to join the party, where he proceeded to scream and cry for at least another 15 minutes, until he suddenly stopped, turned and looked at me and declared "I feew bedder now," and away he went.

I don't feel particularly relaxed after a weekend like this, but I do feel satisfied. Satisfied at all the work we got done, satisfied that the kid crashed like a sack of potatoes when we got home, and satisfied that I'm about to crawl into bed with Tyra and and those that are "still in the running in the hopes of becoming Americas Next. Top. Model."

Sha-zam.

Hope your weekend was excellently productive, and meltdown free!

Gettin' 'er done

Do you ever have one of those days where you get in a groove and you're UNSTOPPABLE??

Yeah, that was me today.

I caught up on a weeks worth of laundry including washing all the sheets, went grocery shopping, played OUTSIDE with the boy for an hour (ohmygawd it's so nice to play OUTSIDE again!!), watched Madagascar 2, made dinner, serged a bunch of cloth diaper wipes, and here I am blogging at a decent hour. Go me!

And where, you may ask, was my husband during all of this? Poor Steve spent the day recovering from a near knock-out head-butt that he received from Griffin this morning. Some morning fun of horsing around on the bed turned nasty when Griffin threw his little self onto the bed with not a care in the world as to where he was landing. His head made a perfect connection with Steve's face, and Steve is now sporting a very swollen lip, along with a loose tooth and a chunk of skin missing from the inside of his lip. Being "care free" has it's disadvantages some days!

And now, once story time is done in the other room, we're going to crawl into bed with this weeks Lost, and turn the lights out early. I love having productive days like this!

How was your day?

Enjoying Snow...but Dreaming of Spring

I have a ton of posts that have been floating around in my head for the past few weeks, but seem to have trouble finding the gosh darn TIME to sit down at the computer and get them out! And since this wee brain of mine only holds so much, I found myself here at the computer tonight sending off a quick email to a friend and thought I just better get something down on "paper," before y'all abandon me!

Wanna know what I did today? I went shopping...seed shopping!

Me and a few friends left our husbands and children at home today and headed to Guelph for the Organic Conference. We spent the afternoon wandering around a (VERY crowded) hall looking at seeds, and sampling a pile of organic goodies, including some of the best ice cream I've ever had - Ginger flavoured! (Trust me, it was amazing!)

It is minus thirtythousand outside, I swear, and it's nice to be dreaming of vegetable gardens and perennials at a time like this. Despite the cold, blowy nastiness that is happening outside on a regular basis, I feel the seasons changing already. The days are getting longer - the sun now shines DIRECTLY in my eyes as I drive home to the west at night, instead of being a sinking memory. I arrive home at dusk, instead of after dark. I see a spectacular sun rise as I leave for work, instead of when I arrive there. I'm dreaming of green grass and new life. (And no, I'm not pregnant yet!)

And still, I know that we have a few more months of this aching cold to endure. Tomorrow, we're going to take advantage of our proximity to winter sport, and head for the ski hills, Griffin in tow! We think he's ready to be strapped onto a pair of skis for the first time, and are lucky enough to be able to ski close by and for cheap, so if he hates it we're not out a whole lot. We've been talking to him about skiing all day, and tonight as Steve marched up the stairs with a sagging, no nap Griffin in tow, Steve asked if he wanted to go skiing tomorrow. His response?

"No. Go bed."

A long day, and a tired boy! Rest up, my sweet...you're in for a treat tomorrow!

A very quilty weekend.

(Well, hello! Long time no see! I'll spare you the excuses, you've heard them all. Heck, you've probably USED them all! You know - working, sleeping, eating, the occasional (some may say a little TOO occasional) shower, etc etc etc. Lets just get on with it, shall we?)

So after a busy week, and a fun Friday night in the city with Kendra, I headed back here on Saturday morning. With NO plans on the horizon (that's right, not a ONE!) save for the company of my Ma for the weekend, I seized the opportunity to get quilty with it yesterday. Having an extra pair of hands in the house, and a 3 hour nap by Griffin made the day INCREDIBLY successful. This morning I scooched back downstairs for a bit, and polished 'er off. That's right - one quilt, complete, in less than 24 hours! Okay, okay, it's a baby quilt. It's small. SO???

The binding still needs to be stitched on, but I'm more in the mood to blog than sew right now. Plus, sewing binding is a very ritualistic thing for me, that always involves alcohol and trashy television (90210 is best) on my computer, while sitting in bed, and I'm not quite ready to crawl into bed yet, seeing as it's only 3 o'clock in the afternoon. (Often I am MORE than ready to hide my head under the covers by this time of day, but today, I'm not.)

Since the quilt is still in my living room, and hasn't been shipped off to it's recipients yet, I'm not going to show it to you here. However, if you're dying to see it, and your name is NOT Julia or Rafa, then you may click on this linky-poo to see it. If your name IS Julia or Rafa, NO CLICKING. Besides, you kids should be waaay to busy pushing out a baby to be surfing the net!

Since I remembered AFTER cutting about 1/2 of the little squares that I was going to strip piece the quilt (which, if you're not familiar with quilting, has less to do with quilting with no clothes on, and more to do with sewing with long strips of fabric and then cutting it all apart) I had a whole bunch of little squares of fabric leftover. I decided to take pity on someone I feel VERY VERY sorry for: Widdle Dude. Because the life of a Widdle Dude in our house? It's a hard knock life. It's a cold, cold life. Nobody plays with you, people push crackers and Lego around in your stroller before they even THINK of taking you for a ride!

So now at least Widdle Dude is warm, under a fancy new Widdle Dude sized quilt. Neglected still, but maybe a tiny bit less so. I'm thinking about making him a teddy bear next...poor little guy!

(P.S. Can I brag about some other brilliance for a second? Today, around nap time, Griffin and I had our customary weekend fight, that goes a little something like this: "ME NO WANNA LAY DOWN! NO NAP! NOT TIRED!" Rub eyes. Annnnnnd repeat. So then came the brilliance. We had lunch, and then proceeded to lay down on the couch with a pillow and a blanket and a show on the DVD player, not for "nap" time, but for "quiet time." Quiet time is what Griffin has the other 5 days a week, when he's not busy fighting me, at daycare. They snuggle up on and around the couch with pillows and blankets, and all fall asleep with some asinine blather highly educational programming coming from Treehouse TV in front of them. Dudes, it worked! I figured why not go with what works 5 days a week elsewhere? I'm surprised it took us this fricking long to figure that out. Now, if only we could figure out this night time business, we'd be laughing!)

Resolution, Schmezolution.

So, I suppose it's that time of the year that we talk about resolutions. Except I hate that word. We prefer to talk about GOALS.

An old boss of mine once said that if you don't have dreams, you can't have dreams come true....slightly cheese, but true none the less. Steve and I are fairly big on goals - see, there's a whole list of them over there to the left! To narrow it down though, for this here 2009, the plans are as follows:

1. Get pregnant. A healthy, and pleasant (HA!) nine months later (still in 2009...better get cracking!) give birth to said bambino, here, in our own home. Preferred colour for baby clothing: frilly pink, but will accept blue as well.

2. Make a quilt for my son. (This is actually "underway," if you can call browsing Etsy for fabric being underway. It WILL get done, and BEFORE there is a sibling to sew for! Oh, and while I'm sewing? Maybe finish off that wedding quilt for my brother - the brother that got married 2 and a half years ago. (Hangs head sheepishly...))

3. Eat healthier. Drink more water. USE the elliptical machine in our spare bedroom, instead of tripping over it to get to the computer.

4. Find a local babysitter; go out on more dates with eachother.

5. Go to the library more often (bring books back BEFORE they're overdue!) Read more.

6. Do things with purpose - don't waste time (on the internet...) and make every moment count.

7. Spend less. Save more.

8. Find some efficient, organized system for conquering the laundry, and never, EVER AGAIN let Mt Foldmore reach the proportions that it did this week!

So, what are YOU doing in 2009?

Holiday Home Backstage Tour

So I believe there may have been a little mocking of ME, over here today, where Gretel gave her own version of a Holiday Home Tour. Now I know it was mocking with the most possible love, but I wanted to prove that despite my well framed photos yesterday, it wasn't all cupcakes and butterflies around here either!

First, lets start with the obvious - that being the biggest trip hazard. This is Hurricane Griffin's toy corner, at the bottom of the stairs. Each night when I come down from making sure he's not sleeping on the landing, or has at least a few covers on him, I try to kick the most potentially harmful objects out of the way (like the trike!) just in case my child who climbs down the stairs at 3am every night to crawl into my bed, happens to tumble.

Good Ol' Mount Washmore:Good Ol' Mount Foldmore: While photographing Mt. Foldmore, I happened to look up at our unfinished basement windows and notice they were covered in mould! AWESOME!

The (seems to be) constant state of the nation at our back door. Why no, we didn't have a party, why do you ask? Hope you don't want to sit down to put your boots on, before you go running out the door! Also next to the back door is this:Looks normal right? Bowl full of dog food, ready to be eaten? But NO. When you have a picky eater in the house, like our Dudler, it's just a mess waiting to happen. Dudley doesn't MIND this food, per say, but week to week there is generally one "flavour" of this 5 flavour dog food that he just prefers to skip. Skip, as in leave it in the bowl you may ask? Why no! Skip as in pick out the offending pieces and discard them on the floor. This week, it appears the "red" flavour is on the outs. Last week it was green. Festive, huh?

Speaking of himself, here he is atop our bed. Griffin calls this "his" bed. We call it our bed. But it's clear here who's bed it really is, isn't it?My sewing room - caught on a good day as I'm in the process of sandwiching a quilt, which requires more than the 12 square inches I normally manage to clear on my sewing table. Hey, at least I have a table, in a room, all to myself!Oops...maybe not such a good day.
And that's it! I hope you enjoyed your fast little backstage tour of my home. Please go check out Gretel's holiday tour too...her backstage tour is WAY more impressive than mine! I miss you too my dear!

P.S. Want to know why we try to keep it so nice inside? It's because at this "festive" time of the year, OUTSIDE generally looks like THIS:
Welcome to Blizzard Central! We don't get out much in winter 'round these parts!
Edited to Add: Darn it, I missed the BEST PART!! I got to my bed last night only to discover that King Picky Eater must have been pissed at me for SOMETHING (maybe for making fun of him on the blog?) and kindly left me a big pile of doggy barf on the little mat next to the bed! Luckily I saw it before stepping in it. Also luckily, I was too tired to photograph it, so you’ll just have to let your imagination do the work! Happy Holidays!
